Cycle of Abuse

If an abusive relationship was always violent, the relationship would have not started in the first place, but instead what happens is a cycle of abuse. This cycle of abuse includes tension building, the actual violent incident, followed by reconciliation and the "calm" honeymoon period. The honeymoon period even though it is the happiest period, is still not that "happy", but because it seems so much better than the actual violence periods. According to Centre Safe women's resource center, "The cycle can occur hundreds of times in an abusive relationship, the total cycle taking anywhere from a few hours, to a year or more to complete. However, the length of the cycle usually diminishes over time so that the “reconciliation” and “calm” stages may disappear.". Though every relationship is different, this cycle of abuse is the central pattern in almost all domestic violence situations. This cycle of abuse ultimately hinders the leaving of an abusive relationship.
